Stroke or brain injury rehabilitation
Progressive neurological diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s, dementia)
Head and neck cancer rehabilitation
Voice disorders
Cognitive-communication deficits from various causes
Swallowing difficulties — known as dysphagia — can occur due to stroke, neurological conditions (like Parkinson’s or dementia), head and neck cancer, or general aging.
As a speech-language therapist, I assess and treat swallowing to help reduce the risk of choking and aspiration. Treatment aims to make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable.
Swallowing support may include:
Bedside or clinical swallow assessments
Modified texture recommendations using the IDDSI framework (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative)
Exercises to strengthen swallowing muscles
Compensatory strategies (e.g., posture changes, pacing)
Mealtime plans and safe feeding techniques
Education for caregivers and staff in home, hospital, or aged care settings
Communication treatment helps adults who are experiencing difficulties with speaking, understanding, expressing themselves, or using their voice. These challenges may result from stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, or other neurological and progressive conditions.
As a speech-language therapist, I provide support in the following areas:
Aphasia: Helping people who have difficulty finding words, understanding language, or using reading and writing after a stroke or brain injury.
Dysarthria: Improving speech clarity when muscle weakness affects the way speech sounds — often due to stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or motor neuron disorders.
Apraxia of Speech: Rebuilding the brain’s ability to plan and sequence the movements needed for clear speech.
Voice: Voice therapy focuses on improving vocal quality, pitch, projection, and comfort using safe, evidence-based techniques.
Therapy for voice changes caused by conditions like:
Spasmodic dysphonia
Muscle tension dysphonia
Parkinson’s disease
Age-related voice changes (presbyphonia)
Vocal nodules or strain
Gender-affirming voice support
Cognitive-communication therapy focuses on improving how a person thinks, processes, and communicates after a brain injury, stroke, or due to neurological conditions like dementia or Parkinson’s disease.
As a speech-language therapist, I help adults improve:
Memory (e.g., remembering appointments or names)
Attention (e.g., staying focused during conversation)
Problem-solving and reasoning
Organisation and planning (e.g., managing a daily schedule)
